What to Wear in Finland (All Seasons) for Outdoor Day Trips

What to wear in Finland for outdoor day trips (all seasons)

Finland’s weather changes quickly, even within the same day. The easiest way to stay comfortable is to dress in layers and plan for wind and moisture. You do not need expensive hiking gear. You do need practical clothing you can adjust.

The simple layering system

Base layer
Comfortable against the skin. Helps you stay dry if you sweat.

Mid layer
Warmth. Easy to add or remove.

Outer layer
Protection from wind and rain or wet snow.

In forests near Helsinki, long trousers are usually the most comfortable choice year-round.

Spring

Spring can feel mild in the sun and cold in the shade. Trails can be muddy after snowmelt.

  • Use a warmer mid layer than you expect

  • Choose an outer layer with a hood

  • Expect damp ground and puddles

Summer

Summer is the simplest season, but evenings can be cool and rain can arrive fast. Insects are also a factor.

  • Light layers you can adjust

  • A thin jacket for wind or rain

  • Long sleeves and trousers if you want fewer bites

Autumn

Autumn is great for comfortable temperatures and clear air, but rain is common and daylight shortens.

  • A warmer mid layer

  • An outer layer that handles rain and wind

  • Prioritize grip for wet roots and rocks

Winter

Winter can be crisp and dry, or wet and near freezing. Either way, layering matters.

  • A base layer that does not hold moisture

  • A warm mid layer (wool or fleece works well)

  • A wind-blocking outer layer

  • Warm hat, gloves, and socks

  • Footwear with grip for packed snow and ice

Shoes matter more than most people expect

Forest paths can be uneven with roots, rocks, and slippery surfaces after rain or snow. Choose shoes you can walk in for a few hours and that have good grip. If conditions look icy, traction aids can make the day much easier.

The most common mistake

Dressing for the first 10 minutes. Start slightly cool, then adjust as you walk. Bring one extra warm layer in your bag for breaks.

For guided day trips

We keep a calm pace and stop regularly, so comfort while standing still is important. Dress so you will be warm enough during breaks, not only while moving.
