Packing for a Day Out
A good day pack keeps things simple. You want to stay comfortable if the weather changes, have enough energy for a few hours outside, and be prepared for small surprises like wet ground or a slower pace than expected.
The essentials
Water
Snacks you’ll actually eat
Phone with enough battery
A small power bank if you have one
Tissues or wet wipes
Any personal medication you might need
For comfort
One extra warm layer, even in warmer seasons
A rain jacket or compact shell if the forecast is uncertain
A sit pad or small towel for breaks on rocks or damp ground
Practical extras that help
Small trash bag (to carry out wrappers, peels, tissues)
Hand sanitizer
Sunscreen on bright spring and summer days
Insect repellent in summer and early autumn
If you’re bringing kids
Extra snacks, plus something easy they like
A spare layer for them
Something small to do during breaks
For photos
Lens cloth (fog and moisture are common)
A dry bag or zip bag for your phone/camera in rain
Keep it light
Overpacking makes the day less enjoyable. Aim for a small backpack with just what you’ll use, plus one extra layer and basic rain protection.
